However, I’m keeping in mind that Mac OS X 10.5 is due by the time Vista is released.

Tee hee… clever title indeed. It’s still sad to see how much Microsoft “borrows” from Apple… you’d think that, at some point, they’d come up with a totally original idea…

Virtual Folders is one prominent example of Microsoft originality and Apple “borrowing.”
According to the WinSuperSite page on Virtual Folders at http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_virtualfolders.asp, “… I should mention that Apple’s latest operating system, Mac OS X 10.4 … offers very similar functionality. However, Microsoft announced and demonstrated Windows Vista’s virtual folders functionality a year before Apple revealed that it was working on that feature …”

And Apple showcased them in iTunes, and some other company showed something similar years before that, and Xerox PARC did _____ before that. We could go on forever you see.
The issue is, what has shipped and what has lingered on “paper” so to speak, or in the collective heads of bloggers - “it’s coming soon I swear!”.

I found this quote on another blog…
“But the Smart Folders idea goes back much deeper in Apple history –
in fact, it pre-dates Jobs’ Second Coming. Smart Folders used to be
called “Views” and they were a pre-announced feature of Copland, the
ill-fated OS that was eventually replaced by the NeXT OS.”
NeXT OS is, of course, the prototype version of OS X. The author of this statement says that he saw this version of Smart Folders (a.k.a. Views) in ‘96.
